Paul Ingmar Winje
Story from Jack Peck
Paul Ingmar Winje was an immigrant who came to America from Norway. He was born on November 3rd of 1896 in his home country of Norway, and wanted to come to North America to join his brother, who had already immigrated. His brother lived in Sacramento, California, and he wanted to join him in his farming business that he had established there. When he was 17, he left Norway in March of 1913 and arrived in Boston. Soon after travelling to California and farming, he became a carpenter. He later met my great grandmother, married her, and moved out to Minnesota to get treatment for her tuberculosis. They stayed in Minnesota for the rest of their life and had four kids. Paul loved living in America, mainly for the experiences with his brother and his wife, as well as the sights that he saw in his travels across the country. Though he heavily adopted many aspects of American culture, he kept much of his Norwegian heritage. He sang songs in Norwegian, told stories of trolls and other Norse myths, and continued to have a heavy Scandinavian accent despite his good English. He didn’t wish to leave the country for most of his life, but visited his home and family in Norway in 1963.
